Clay Regazzoni was not so young when he started to race. As we know, until he was 24 his track record only included the inevitable challenges against friends and the gymkhana of Lukmanier, a race of competence on 25 June 1961. In April 1963, he competed in a sports car race organised by the Automobile Club of Switzerland at Montlhéry. Then he bought an Austin Healey Sprite, which was home-tuned and modified, making his debut on 1 September 1963 in the Marchairuz hillclimb but the press…didn’t even notice, not even the authoritative and well-informed Automobile Revue. People thought it was an omission due to a bad result, or Clay could have retired or perhaps not even competed…But none of that. He started, finished and came 19th out of 19 starters, but third in the 1150 class of the Grand Touring category. It’s only that that was…a separate race for drivers making their debut but without a competition licence: in short, the last of the last.
